Two local residents (Upton and Aston Upthorpe) took over as tenants in April 2024. It was renamed from the George & Dragon to the George at Upton. Major refurbishment both inside and outside was carried out between April and September 2024, and is still ongoing regarding the restaurant which is expected to open in November 2024 (as at early October 2024).
It re-opened outside only on Friday 7 June 2024 with an outside bar, based in an old horse-box This facility is named "The Little George". A badged real ale "George Best", from Loddon was dispensed from handpump in this bar and continues inside the pub as from 28 September 2024. The opening times will be gradually increased to hopefully take advantage of some good weather - check on their Facebook page. The food offering in the garden started towards the end of June 2024.
The pub itself re-opened inside on 28 September 2024, Light wood flooring has replaced the former dark wood and the pub bar is effectively a single room. The food offering is burgers, pizzas and truffle fries.
The opening and food times will be extended again by the end of October 2024 - see their Facebook page. One or two changing beers will be introduced later in the year.
The former description was: The George and Dragon is a good stop for those walking the Ridgeway Path. An authentic three-room pub with all the usual wood beams, brasses and large fireplace. Garden and children's play area.
