Branch Pub and Brewery News (June 2022)

Saturday 30 July 2022

Pub news:

  • The newly refurbished Red Lion in Rotherfield Peppard will be opening at midday on Friday 1st July. Initially drinks only while the kitchen is fully reinstated.
  • The White Lion pop-up bar earned over £1k for the fighting fund to save the pub
  • The Lamb, Little Milton, reopened on 19 May then fully opened on 05 June. Note that it does not open on Monday or Tuesday.
  • The Bull on Bell Street reopened on 09 May with a lavish dinner attended by local dignitaries including our very own chairman!
  • The Chequers, Aston Tirrold, is targeted to reopen in September.
  • Orwells is no longer interested in the Plowden Arms, which is reopening in September – maybe.
  • The Coach & Horses, Chiselhampton, reopened 30 May. It is now owned by a small pubco.
  • The Little Angel is closed temporarily.
  • The Maltsters Arms, Rotherfield Greys reopened on 27 May. Early reports indicate that the beer is being well kept.
  • The Cross Keys in Wallingford reopened on 13 May after purchase by Oak Taverns and refurbishment. Again, early reports indicate that the quality and variety of real ales available has greatly improved.
  • ....whilst the George, Dorchester, closed the same day for refurbishment. Opening is targeted for mid-August and a new manager is being sought.
  • The Comrades Club in Wallingford now has a Premises Licence instead of a Club Premises Certificate. This might mean it is more open to casual visitors. Watch this space!
  • The King William IV in Hailey, near Ipsden, has new tenants.

Brewery news:

  • The Bell St Brewery is now gone, lock, stock and barrel, so commercial brewing in the heart of Henley is officially no more.
  • Facts are still hard to gather regarding SOX Brewery. We are no longer certain whether brewing is still taking place in West Berkshire or Checkendon, although there has been some publicity suggesting that a taproom is imminent. SOX's Mr Toad’s bitter (3.9% ABV) was in full flow at the Black Horse during our last Branch Meeting and was well received by many of our attendees.
